Why is the Science of Nutrition Ignored in Medicine? | T. Colin Campbell | TEDxCornellUniversity

my topic is about nutrition. A big, big topic, a word, a concept, an idea that we’ve all spoken about
from time to time. But in reality, it seems to me that we haven’t been able
to find very much consensus about what that word really means. So, I want to share with you
some of the stuff that I’ve learned in the last 60+ years with many students
and colleagues and others. Honest question concerning,
What is nutrition? And what is the right kind of food to eat
in order to get the best possible health? Let me start out with a big idea. It’s one that has sort of
come to me over the years that I think is worth saying. Namely, nutrition, when done right, can create more health than all the pills
and procedures combined. I know that’s a big startling idea
but I really mean that. If we do it right,
if we eat the right food, we get away from drugs, we can be healthy. So, there’s a problem, basically, and this is the problem
I wanted to address here. Nutrition is not taught
in medical schools. There’s not a medical
school in the United States that properly teaches nutrition –
hardly at all in many of them. Secondly, among the 130 or so
medical specialties – which is a sort of procedure
by which physicians are reimbursed for services – of the 130 medical specialties
that we now have, not one is called nutrition. So, here’s a problem. Here are the professionals
who are supposed to be offering us their services in the area of health care, and not been taught the one subject that is the most important,
in my view, of all. And secondly, even if they did know
something about it and they got some training, they’re not really going to be able
to get reimbursed for services. Therein lies some of the problem
with the fact that some people, many people in this country, have difficulty understanding
what this question is really all about. Of course, as I mentioned,
the public is massively confused. That’s one of the reasons, and it needs to be solved because there’s so much
to offer, actually. It’s very difficult to know,
quite frankly – and I think you would agree with this, that one of the problems
with this issue is about confusion – it’s very difficult to know
for the average person whether another claim,
on radio, TV, conversations or whatever, it’s very difficult to know
how valid that claim may be. And I’m sure many of you know
that claims are all over the map and quite in contrast with each other. So, as I look back over the years
I have been involved in this, I’ve sorted out a couple of ideas, that if we stick to these two ideas alone, we’ll get to that sort of land
that I’m talking about where so much health could be created. First of all, eat whole foods. Whole foods, not the individual nutrients
and food fragments within them. And by that, I mean
no nutrient supplements. We’ve done a lot of research
on nutrient supplements; it’s a huge industry,
multi-billion dollars a year. Fifty percent of the population
uses nutrient supplements as a means to nutrition. I’m not talking about that. Nutrients taken out of the food,
out of the context, do not do exactly the same thing
for the most part that they do when they are in food. And secondly, there are fragments
taken out of even plants, incidentally, and I’m referring to plants
as a good form of nutrition. Even the stuff taken out of plants,
like oil, sugar, if you will, maybe it’s the right
kind of food, in a sense, but when you take it out
and use it separately, we get a different response
in what we do, generally speaking, than the whole food. This is another idea to keep in mind:
plants provide all the protein we need. That’s somewhere around
8-10% of total calories. Turns out, if you look at the literature
more carefully, that’s enough. We do not need to eat animal foods
to get the animal protein. Plants have all the protein
we need to have. So, just those two ideas. Whole foods, obviously meaning plants
because we don’t need animal protein, animal foods to go along with that. That combination really works. Now, my career started,
as I said, many, many years ago, and I happened to come across an idea
when I was working in the Philippines, helping to co-ordinate a national program
to feed the malnourished children where, in fact, our efforts were intended to actually make sure
these children got enough protein – even good quality protein,
animal protein, if you like. And I saw something that
sort of didn’t exactly agree with that, and we are not getting onto these details,
but it led to this question: animal-based protein,
which was my background, did not look to be as good
as it was touted to be. So, we organized a study. As we started to look into this question, Is protein as good as what we think it is,
as I had thought it was? Here is one little display
of some information among hundreds of things like this. Cancer, we all tend to agree,
starts with a gene being mutated. It’s happening more or less all the time
in some of our cells. So, it starts with a gene mutation,
normal cell to a cancer cell. As a result of it starting with a gene, if we have a cancer gene,
we will have cancer, right? That leads to some suggestions: we should get analyzed
for genetic background and this and that. But, in my view,
cancer is not a genetic disease, even though that’s the most
highly touted maxim, if you will, of the cancer industry. Here’s what happens. This is an experimental animal study
that we used much in my career early on. It started as a mutated gene, and we followed the progression
of the early cancer over the first twelve weeks. If we fed lower levels of protein, 5% – remember I said 8 to 10%
is fine, is good enough – so, we start with 5% and we feed the animals who had
the mutated gene 5% of protein, we get no cancer. If we feed them, on the other hand,
the higher levels of protein, 20%, we get lots of cancer. So, here is a striking difference
between 5 and 20%. But then we went to the next question. We wanted to know what would happen if we just switched
the diet back and forth between 5% and 20%. So, starting with 20%, the first three weeks
the cancers are growing. These are precancerous
lesions, if you will. Switching to 5% turns it off; 20%, we turned it back on again; 5%, it turns it off. That was striking at that time,
it still is today for a lot of people, because if we assume that cancer
is all coming from genes and if you have the genes
you will get cancer, maybe if you don’t, you won’t. In this particular case, what we are showing
is that nutrition is important. So it leads to this idea here:
we may have cancer genes, all of us, whether we were born with them or whether they were created
in our lifetime, they’re sort of hanging around, they remain basically silent
until they are nourished. So, it puts the onus then on the question concerning nutrition
being the cause of cancer, not genetics. We think of nutrition
in a very simplistic way. We tend to think of individual nutrients
doing their individual things. We value foods according to how much nutrients it has –
this, that or something else. Most of our thinking about nutrition
is focused on individual nutrients. In reality, it turns out –
and this is just one thought – it turns out the amount
of nutrients we consume, let’s say in a spoonful
or cupful or whatever, we can know how much is there in theory, but that has little relationship to how much nutrients there may be
at the functional site, wherever that may be in the body. So, the amount we are consuming here has almost nothing to do,
quantitatively speaking, with the amount that’s operating
in the functional site. Which raises a question. There’s a lot going on
between here and there, and it’s sort of an activity, a bunch of activities
that’s very, very complex. And then, individual nutrients, when they are examined
for their activities, generally, we think of –
this is the way it tends to get taught – this nutrient causes this response and here is the mechanism
by which it works. That’s the way we tend to think, and that’s the way cause and effect
relationships often happen. It turns out that, in our hands,
the protein turned on the cancer; I wanted to know what was the mechanism by which it worked. Which enzyme? Which transport mechanism
or what have you might be working? That’s the basis for the entire
drug industry in large measure. If we see something going wrong
and we want to solve the problem, we want to know what the mechanism is. So, maybe we can make
a chemical to block it if we wish, or enhance it, whatever the case might be. It turned out in our hands: the protein caused cancer,
but not by one mechanism, every time we looked for a mechanism,
in a sense, we found one. It got up to about ten or so, and in a couple of those mechanisms, not only was the protein
turning on the process, it was actually attenuating or minimizing
the effect of those processes that tend to protect us. So, the high-protein diet was actually sort of getting
the whole bucketful of mechanisms working together like a symphony
to create a response. It was a very exciting idea. Again, it shows some degree of complexity, which I would suggest is really important
in this consideration. And then this leads us to the idea
that nutrients work best in whole foods, as I mentioned before. It worked best in whole foods; you take them out
to work with them individually, it’s altogether different oftentimes. Sometimes they work sort of the way
you expect them to do, but it’s not necessarily
a life-style practice. So those three observations are pointed
to a different philosophical concept regarding what nutrition is. It’s not a function
of individual nutrients and adding up these effects; it’s all of them
basically working together. When we consume the foods,
animal-based foods, in order to get that good protein
we heard so much about, what that tends to do is to displace
the consumption of the foods that we otherwise should be consuming. So, when we look at the totality
of the food effect on the various disease processes, it’s not just one thing working,
be it protein or anything else, it’s the combination,
the presence of those nutrients, as opposed to the lack of those things
that are not there. Now we know, we’ve got good evidence for this,
and not generally known, that kind of diet
we heard from our grandmothers, “Eat your vegetables
and so forth and so on, and prevent future disease.” Not sure we paid
a lot of attention to that, especially when we were young – we figured out we’ll get a solution
to that problem when it comes. But in reality, now we know,
and this is not yet published very well, namely: the kind of diet
that actually prevents future problems, when it’s done right, actually can be used
to treat existing problems. So now we have altogether
a new paradigm, if you will. Instead of relying on single chemicals, be they drugs or whatever else,
to correct the problem, now we can simply look
at this kind of food to sort of do it. And it happens very quickly, within ten days, two weeks or so, you can see remarkable changes occur in sort of biochemistries, if you will. Once we get to thinking about food
as a means of treatment, we’re in a different territory. There’s something
really meaningful in that case because you can see the results so fast. There’s a lot of people now doing this. As a result of some of the work we did
with some of my colleagues, this is now being tried by people, and many of you here, I think,
probably would agree with that: you switch, you got a problem,
you can see the results very quickly without side-effects. Why is nutrition not taken seriously
by the medical profession? As I said before, it’s not. It needs to be taken seriously. Medicine, or the practice of medicine, whether we’re doing
research or practicing, is what I call reductionist. We’re looking at one thing at a time; we’re looking at just this disease –
not some other disease – just this disease. We’re looking at usually
just one antidote, this drug or that nutrient, if you will, and also, at the same time, we’re thinking about
one mechanism at a time. And so, medicine
is a reductionist process, that’s what our system is: it’s highly reductionist. We now know we have a lot of problems
with that approach. Things are not working like they should; there’s a lot of evidence to show that. It’s also very, very expensive. And if we are going to rely
on that highly technical philosophy to keep us well, we need third party care, namely the doctors or others. In contrast, nutrition,
when everything is working together, as it is simply, as I suggested, it’s working basically comprehensively; it’s not working one mechanism, all of these seem
to be changed the same way and the same direction
to create the same response. That’s a very exciting concept. That, in turn, leads us to just wonder, What kind of foods should we eat
to get that effect. And that’s first-person health care. All of a sudden now,
the locus of control comes back to us. What we need to do is just do it, and in that way, we can actually eliminate a substantial proportion
of pharmaceuticals for our treatment or other pills and procedures. And finally, I want to ask the question: Why is nutrition not taken seriously
by the nutrition science community? You probably thought
that they are taking it seriously. I’m not sure they are. I’ve been in that community,
let’s say, for a very, very long time. We have problems. And the sense is is that
the problems are largely related to too much corporate
interference and control. Whether it’s coming in the form of money
that may be supplying the funding, which sort of tethers us to that idea, or whether it’s coming
from our participation with corporate sections on the outside. Not that we shouldn’t; we need to do that,
we need to have this relationship. That’s not the issue. But the corporate influence is such now that we keep falling back
on pills and procedures, looking at things very specifically. We’re losing track; we’re not getting the essence
of what we can learn from nutrition. So, this happens also
at the level of policy. I spent about 20 years
on national policy development, where we attempted
to translate the latest science into something we can tell the public. And once again,
it’s a very complex process. But the center of that interaction is again falling back on looking
at things in a very, very fine way. And so, in the whole process,
whether in practicing medicine, in policy development, or doing research, which we did a lot of that,
just focusing on one thing at the time, we are losing track
of what really matters. And so, we’re doing that –
I would suggest to use a tough word: our system is corrupted, it’s seriously corrupted
from top to bottom, and we’re all part of it. And what we really need to do
is to do it right and make people well because the cost to this society
at large is huge. The cost of health care
being the highest per capita of any country in the world. Let’s redesign nutrition –
I call it Nutrition Renaissance. I’m almost in a position of throwing away
what we have done in the past, gather the whole idea, and then use it again to actually
help to explain, basically, cancer. And I would argue
that we are in a position now to take the evidence we now have and just go forward and do that. Thank you very much.

  1. Food is medicine. The science is there…it is strong. Whole Plant rich, nuts, seeds, very low carb, healthy fats, rich proteins. For over a hundred years, the science has been there Plants do not provide all we need… looking at these studies, the flaws begin wi the bias in the studies, to the epidemiology studies used. It is shown that cancer feed off of sugars… from carbs.

  2. China study has been thoroughly invalidated, with multiple examples of flawed/misleading messages that incorrectly reflect the actual science.

  3. His book is the prime example of popular pseudo-science, which is pretty much the exact opposite of actual science, but okay… He still got a point with nutritional science being underestimated by many physicians.

  4. I think that we should leave the medical professionals to treating disease and trauma overall they do a very fine job.

    Meanwhile we need a new branch of the healing arts that focuses on wellness including nutrition, exercise, mental aspects and such. This professionals would be community based and their creed should be to get to know the person. Frequent encounters and visits to monitor and ascertain ones state. You don't need a doctor to check ones blood pressure, respiration rate, height and weight, evaluate mobility, execute a simple eye test etc etc. Consider this, one visits their physician as part of the preliminary examination they take the blood pressure, there blood pressure seems higher than it should be … a physician might consider a drug treatment while it could be that there is are external factors, had a recent argument, perhaps doctor's offices leave them unsettled, financial stress could be a contributing factor. A wellness practitioner who has seen this individual on a regular basis and has tracked the BP over a period of years could evaluate the BP characteristics with a time line chart with many data points. They could take more than the usual 15 mins with a patient and get to know them far better in effect pre-screening whether a trip to the doctor to consider a drug therapy is appropriate, or perhaps they just need to exercise more, or watch what they eat, or learn to deal with stress more effectively.

  5. The wolfing instinct is powerful, and defends itself with a quick, negative, emotional reaction towards any suggestion to chew more thoroughly. If you want build yourself a huge belly, wolf your food. If you want to increase your appetite, grow a big belly. This is not the only reason people gain weight, it's only the main reason. Sugar is another culprit, as well as not enough roughage at mealtime. Regular exercise is also key to weight loss. You disagree. Google search the "hunger hormones" and find out that it takes 20 minutes to feel sated at a meal. This information can be unpacked to provide powerful leverage to correct obesity and maintain a healthy weight. I haven't given you all the information, and I'm willing to do that in the responses.

    I look forwards to criticisms and inquiries. I lost 50 lbs. in one year, and kept it off….the easy way. I am in control of my weight. My doctor told me to stop losing weight.

  6. Wonder what he’d say about all the people experiencing great health from carnivore diet. Also he does talk about the issues we have digesting plants and their toxins… We do not have a digestive system like herbivores and that is why we struggle with plants and fruits.

Not only do people need to understand and accept that our whole medical system is corrupt to the core and that food nutrition is the key to good health, but they need to realize that pharmaceuticals are the biggest con perpetuated on humanity in history. Drugs are synthetic, toxic chemicals. They cannot heal a single disease, they can only suppress some symptoms while doing terrible damage to the human body. We must stop relying on taking poisonous chemicals and using products filled with toxins if we are going to stop this downward slide into constant chronic illness.

For me, Dr. Campbell is a knowledgeable beacon for explaining optimal health and functional longevity, I have been studying and researching this area since the 1980s, and what I have learned, and what has worked so well for me, is expertly summarized here by Dr. Campbell. Regarding health care in the United States, I have an interesting viewpoint: Health care is what an individual person does for their own well being (first-person, as the doctor says), but when a person's condition requires a third person intervention (the medical establishment), I see it then not as health care, but as illness care. In the US, the "health care" system is no such thing at all. It is an illness care system, because if the individual is eating as Dr. Campbell suggests, then usually there is no need for illness care (third-person). So, I see our massive, profit-driven medical establishment in this country as a colossal illness care system, treating illnesses (for the most part) that are brought on by the individual due to substandard eating and lifestyle choices. What feeds this broken "health care" system is multi-faceted: 1) most people want quick and easy solutions such as pills or surgery, rather than a lifetime fitness regimen and proper eating, 2) doctors are quick to give the public what they want because it means more money in their pockets, and they have no training in nutrition in the first place, 3) insurance companies earn their massive profits on this broken system, not on folks who eat properly, exercise regularly, and remain healthy, 4) the average person sees all the conflicting internet claims on how to eat, has no time to personally research and study it, and therefore remains confused about the reality and importance of human dietary needs, 5) this illness care system has been growing and going on for so long in this country that it is now a gargantuan monster that is nearly impossible to stop, an out-of-control nightmare that fosters poor health and early death. That's my brief take on things based on what I have learned over the past forty years (my singular essential goal in life is to live long and finish strong, and my extensive study of all facets of this eternal dietary discussion has clearly demonstrated to me personally that a whole food plant based diet is the best course of action. It is apparent to me that the manner in which most people in this country eat and live is not working very well, with medical intervention the norm, and a society where it is expected that everyone is on prescription drugs of some kind. That is not for me. I chose a different path, one of optimal health and maximum functional longevity that allow me to thrive … without the intervention of third parties known as doctors!

  9. I have heard before that nutrition is a minimized subject in medical school. This is madness that fits in with an overall madness called capitalism where few exploit the many. Stop selling only drugs and provide preventive medicine which obviously includes nutrition.

    3. Academia trains people to stick to the plan.

  11. Whole foods? Are foods that are grown today safe? I am referring to GMO (genetically modified organism)! Is this modification changing the nutrients?

  12. The fact that we theoretically don't need animal protein is not saying why we shouldn't eat animal protein. We don't need fruits to cover all nutrients, so is that mean we shouldn't eat them? Animal food is not only protein, but also many nutrients You either don't find or hardly find in plants.
    Correlation isn't evidence.

  13. Man talks about misleading science, and then puts casein study as animal protein. Do you now that many rats fed 5% casein actually died before the study ended? They didnt developed cancer, but were dying like flies. Casein is also known carcinogen, and you cant tell that of all animal protein. How can you trust anyone today?

  14. The med system does a pretty good job with rebuilding bodies after physical damage was done by accident. But with disease it's a "disease management for profit" arrangement rather than any serious attempt at curing anything. I know from many accounts where cheap and very effective cures for profitable diseases were kicked out of the system, forcing doctors to keep up the old line of accepted treatment that is expensive and only marginally effective, and generally keeps the patents returning to spend more money. One in particular was a cancer surgeon (heard the interview with him on a radio program) who had a patient who was inoperable, too far gone to fix with surgery, he recommended a dietary plan, the man followed it and cured himself of cancer. Then more started coming to the Dr for the same plan, with similar results. But it wasn't long and the ama sent a rep who demanded the Dr to stop using "unapproved treatments" (never mind how well it was working) or loose his license to practice medicine. He just retired and kept helping people with the dietary plan. Since there's nothing illegal about helping each other eat our way out of disease.

  15. He is wrong. Animal protein is needed. I used to be a vegetarian. But i've felt much better since i started eating more animal product. Besides he only considers cancer. My gradparents have been eating lots of meat eggs milk butter, no cancer. And they are 92 years old. Looking better than this guy. Healthier than most younger people. He should look at other factors.

  17. Does salmon, bass etc count as animal protein with regards to the 5% or more causes cancer cell growth study?

  18. I have healed all life long chronic ailments after removing plant matter from my diet. Have totally healed chronic lifelong migraines, psoriasis and arthritis. Have lots of energy, perfect and calm digestion. Even my teeth are better.

    Also, I live on the 59th parallel north. Organic locally produced plant matter is not available to me year round. But organic grass fed locally produced meat can be picked up directly from the producer only a bike ride away. No tillage needed for anything I eat. Much better for the eco system. And no. I dont eat more meat now than I did when I ate a mixed diet. That means that all that grass seed, fruits, nuts and vegetables was produced with chemicals, shipped, processed, packaged, then transported again, stored, handled and purchased completely for no nutritional purpose what so ever. All it did was making me ill, and harmed the environment.

  19. Is protein carcinogenic because protein contains Nitrogen, which easily becomes a a free-radical when exposed to heat? Our body operates on proteins. In our cells, DNA is transcribed by RNA, which then creates proteins using amino acids. Antibodies are proteins. Cell walls are made with protein. Enzymes are protein. What differentiates one cell in an organ from a cell in another organ are the proteins those cells make from their DNA. There are 22 amino acids in the body that combine to make 1,000's of proteins in the body. Without protein creation in the cells from DNA, you are actually dead. So, where do those amino acids come from in the diet if animal protein is eliminated?

  20. Pastrolist communities in Africa live off of animal protein diet and almost no plant matter and they dont have cancer or lifestyle diseases.

  22. Nutrition and Food Science degree completed in 1984. I had to wait until it was "safe" to recommend a plant based diet. The China Study made me become 99% whole food based instead of 90% plant based since my undergraduate days. I am happy to be alive to see the truth finally come out, and so many people benefiting from small or more dramatic changes to their diets. Protein really is toxic in amounts higher than the body uses, that includes plant protein. We can not store proteins, the excretion of the nitrogen components creates the toxins.

  24. This man has been doing research in plant-based diet for years. Netflix has a couple of documentaries that feature him. His theories are eye-opening and revolutionary. He is a role model and an inspiration.

    I was vegetarian 2 years, after that i was vegan 4 years
    Always sick, never realize it bcause of the diet, get feed up with their doctrine !!! The worst period in my life…

  27. I think it’s not just down to profit. It started with the Western medical ego which still thinks it is superior to the human body. It believes its procedures and drugs are more powerful than anything the body can do to heal itself with things such as nutrition. We have been cultured to hand our health over. If we take responsibility for our own health we are mocked by the medical profession who insist there is nothing WE can do. It’s all down to them to be the Gods that heal us.

  28. I'd like to see a panel discussion that includes Professor Campbell, Mikhaila Peterson, and Dr Shawn Baker. Included in the discussion I would like to hear an explanation by Professor Campbell as to why Mikhaila Peterson couldn't heal until switching to an all beef diet. She eliminated ALL whole plant foods. Her father, Jordan Peterson cured his depression doing the same. Whole foods nearly killed her and nearly destroyed her father Jordan too.

    Dr Shawn Baker has been a carnivore for over two years and has a blood panel that's near perfect. For those that don't know he's a world class athlete that owns records attained as a strict carnivore.

    Owsley Stanley was a strict carnivore and had perfect health for over 50 years. It took and auto accident to kill him at the age of 76. Not eating whole plant food worked for him and protein didn't give him cancer. For what it's worth, LSD didn't hurt him either. 🙂

    Everyone in nutrition thinks they have the answers. If you read them all it leads to much confusion.

  29. My neighbor lived a healthy life of 101 years old. Nutrition and low-stress was his secret. First hospital visit was at 98 years old. He wasn’t even born in a hospital.

  31. I think more emphasis should be put on how we raise animals and cook animal protein. Abused sick animals and charred meat is of course a bad idea, but humans are hunter gatherers fundamentally.

  32. It has been said: "Eat your food as medicine, otherwise you may have to eat your medicine as food…" and the patient loses.
    This is a wonderful speech by an expert and so well told. I cannot believe nutrition is not on the agenda of every doctor. I got cancer and asked the surgeon about my diet, she said it didnt matter and I've had no medical professional ever discuss nutrition with me.

    The three most important things I've learned for good health are
    1. get enough restful sleep
    2. exercise – even just 30mins 3 times per week
    3. eat properly

  39. He's dead wrong about animal protein. Humans werent designed and haven't evolved to eat plants only. Eat grass fed, pasture raised animals, tons of vegetables, minimal amounts of fruit and carbs.

  43. We don't have a healthcare system, but rather an illness management system. This is the problem. When physicians seek to educate the public on how to reverse or prevent chronic disease, of course there will be pushback, but we need to go back to how we ate hundreds of years ago. Whole foods and little to no meat will keep us healthy.

  45. I did whole food diet for 1.5 years. Mt heart diseases continued progressing. It's low quality carbs and seed based proteins and oils that harms you not animal protein.

  46. America vs Asia is the biggest evidence in all hoistory. After 1950s America's consumption of animal product (Meat, Dairy, Egg, Butter, Etc… ) become 10 times higher than Asia… Now the people in America who is in their 40s 50s 60s obeses, dietabitc, heart problems.. %60-70 of America is sick and on medicine.. On the other hand, Asia who balanced diet which consume plant based foods more than animal based products, billion times healthier.. I cannot blame animal products, but obsiviously plants are much better..

  47. People don’t need medicine for sickness, they need healing on a cellular level. To regenerate new healthy cells you need to drink Kangen water and Reliv nutrition shakes. All the smart people doing it now.

  48. All our doctors, nursing homes, nutrition centers, educational guidelines, schools, etc. work under pressure of the corporations that have our government (FDA) under their thumb. Cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, etc. are created and maintained by bad food. The medical establishment relies on us to keep eating bad food pushed on us by food industries, so both the food industry and the medical industry can make great money. Insurance companies make a fortune also. To eradicate bad health is to get rid of bad food. In doing that we get rid of the need for doctors and pharmaceuticals. The systems would come crashing down, including Wall Street that trades on these very industries. It is up to us to eat as whole foods based as we possibly can to regain our health, lose weight and be done with these systems that are designed to keep us sick.

  49. Based on current research the speaker is incorrect. You cannot eat a whole food plant based diet without supplementing and get all the nutrients your body requires. The major vegan experts recommend supplementation for b vitamins and iron as it’s not possible to get is from whole food sources when vegan.

  50. It seems to be the most abundant resources that is in our best interest. Air and water. Fruits and vegetables. Why do us humans tend to believe that something harder to obtain must be better? Sure, gold is more valuable than a tree, but try building a house with it! We should focus more on what we need, and less on what we want. Our 'wants' are corrupted by advertising, greed, and misinformation.

  51. How humans eat has changed completely in the last 100yrs. Most of what is sold is not actually food. It's full of false tastes, low quality (cheap) fats, cheap sugar, and salt. Even our real food like apples and oranges have been bred to be more sugary, sweeter. We need to eat real foods with real nutrients and they're expensive and difficult to find for many communities. I'm lucky in Seattle to have great produce options. Visited friends in Norfolk, Virginia and they had to go out of their way to find the one small store
