Brody School of Medicine’s White Coat Ceremony 2019

Many, many years of work and homework and tutoring, volunteering, shadowing and it just, it was all there. I looked at this
coat for like a minute, just staring at my name and says, “medical student.” That’s
just weird to me. So, I don’t think it has officially sunk in or anything. It feels amazing. It’s been a long time coming. It’s finally great to put on a
white coat. I taught high school math in Warrenton, North Carolina. I thought
that teaching I would really learn how to connect with diverse communities, learn
how to communicate and learn how to be a leader in ways that would really help me in
medicine. I practiced for seven, almost eight years, as a criminal defense attorney and then some personal injury law. My mother became sick. Just a lot of
variables intertwined and brought me back to the idea of medicine again. I was a sick kid and I had a doctor that was really there for me and got me through a
lot of situations that I don’t know if I’d still be here if I didn’t have
someone in my corner like him. So, I can’t think of anything better than to be that
person for someone else. Being Latino, I really want to be able to work with the
Latino community — hopefully be a leader, be advocate for that community, so that
they can actually feel welcomed and not feel scared or intimidated by the
healthcare system. I lost my mom, but I know she’s here with me in spirit. She knew I was accepted she was very happy. She raised me to be the woman that I am,
so I’m very, very happy and know that I’ll represent her well. It’s truly amazing to be in these shoes today and to stand here in this white coat with my
name on it knowing that I’ve earned my spot. These people are amazing — the class
that I’m in. I haven’t met many people that are better, so it’s cool to be part
of such an amazing group and I’m honored to be here with them
